How the colors work
Gray, yellow, green — exactly like the game
Gray means that letter isn't in the answer (or not any more of it than you've already placed). Yellow means it's in the word, just not there. Green means you've got it exactly right. Every tile starts gray after you type it — click through to match what the game showed you, and the candidate list updates instantly.
How does the solver handle a letter that appears twice in a guess?
The same duplicate-letter logic the real game uses: if a letter shows gray in one position and green or yellow in another, it means the word contains that letter, just not more copies of it than you've already placed correctly. The solver accounts for this automatically.
Why is a word I know is the answer missing from the list?
This tool checks a general 172,000-word list rather than the specific, curated answer list the game itself draws from, so on rare occasions the actual answer won't be in our dictionary, or a word we do include was never used as an official answer.
Is using this considered cheating?
That's between you and whoever you're playing with — it's built as a solver for people stuck after a few guesses, not as a way to get the answer on guess one.
- Your first guess matters more than any other — a word with five different common letters (like "crane" or "adieu") gives you more real information than a guess that repeats letters.
- Add every guess you've made, not just your latest one — each row narrows the list further, and skipping one throws away information the solver could have used.
