Why descramble
Built for puzzle-book letters, not just tile games
Jumble puzzles and crossword grids hand you letters in whatever order the setter chose — no rack, no tile values, just a knot of letters and a blank to fill. This tool solves that exact problem: type what you've got, narrow it with a known prefix or suffix, and scan the results by length until the right word jumps out.
What's the difference between this and the word unscrambler?
Same engine and dictionary — this page is just framed for jumble puzzles and crosswords rather than tile games, where you often only know a handful of letters and a target word length rather than a full rack.
I have some letters and a length from a crossword grid — how do I search that?
Type the letters you have, then set "Exact length" to the number of squares. Add a prefix or suffix if you already know a crossing letter at the start or end of the answer.
Does it handle blank or unknown squares?
Yes — use ? or * for any square you don't know yet, and it's treated as any single letter when matching.
- For a jumble puzzle where the letters are already scrambled into a nonsense order, the order you type them in doesn't matter — the tool only cares which letters you have, not their sequence.
- If a crossword clue gives you a definition as well as a length, skim the results for a semantic match rather than picking the first one — several different valid words can share a length and a couple of known letters.
